Rameswaram is one of the famous religious destinations located in the state of Tamil Nadu. Situated in the Ramanathapuram district, Rameswaram features an arid weather with a considerable extent of humidity. In 2004, Rameswaram was declared as municipality by the Government of Tamil Nadu.

Rameswaram Municipality 

Rameswaram Municipality is located at Rameswaram Island with town area of 53 sq km. The government corporation is the major revenue division and head quarters of Rameswaram Taluk. It is important to know that the town generates great income from fishing and tourism sector. Rameswaram is a 3rd grade municipality with 21 wards in which 6 wards are reserved for women and 1 reserved for SC. The Municipality has divided the departments into six divisions such as General, Revenue, Engineering, Town Planning, Public Health and IT Wing.

All the departments are controlled and maintained by Municipal Commissioner who is the chief executive head of the Corporation. The Rameswaram Municipality is striving hard to increase the income and standard of living of the people. Various schemes have been implemented by the Municipality Board that include Poverty Eradication Programme (SJSRY), 12 Finance Commission, Road Development Scheme, MP/MLA Schemes and much more.

Administration of Rameswaram Municipality

As per the records of 2011 census, Rameswaram holds a total population of 44,856. Total number of households is counted to 10579 and the average literacy of the town is calculated to 73.6%.  The administration is headed and guided by 21 members (i.e) one member each from 21 wards. Further, the Chairperson looks over the major activities of the city and the Deputy Chairperson acts as a supporting authority to the board.

In order to offer effective support for the people, the Rameswaram municipality has incorporated the “E-Governance” method in the city. This online system is mainly initialized to help out the citizens by providing essential information regarding the town. E-Governance enables the people to pay the bills & taxes, getting certificates and approval, important documents and much more. Some of the important features of Rameswaram municipality E-Governance system include online dues payment, water taxes, property tax, professional taxes, non tax, birth certificate, death certificate, trade license, building plan approval, complaint registration, application downloads and so on.

Being a part of Ramanathapuram assembly constituency, Rameswaram holds election once in five year for Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly. Dr. M.H. Jawahirullah of Manithaneya Makkal Katchi in alliance of ADMK is the present MLA of Rameswaram. He has won in the election conducted in the year of 2011. Currently, J.K.Riteesh from Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) is the M.P for the Ramanathapuram Assembly Constituency.
